- Search for Nationally-Controlled Sights: Museums belong to one of my favorite tourist sights — a national museum combines together a wide range of exhibits that can present large parts of the country that you would never get to see in any other case. Think about the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C. They are managed by the U.S. government, in a round about way, so you can enter the museums for free, similarly to visiting the local monuments. There are more exhibits than you can see in the average trip as well. Compare that to Mount Vernon, a popular tourist destination just outside of D.C. — there is probably a few hours of entertainment, and for an adult ticket you have to pay $13.
- Visit a Church: A large number of churches and other religious places are regarded as great tourist sites, such as Paris’ Notre-Dame, but the entry is free. Architectural buffs, take heed: you can witness some of the best-preserved buildings simply by visiting religious sites while on your sightseeing. Cemeteries are often worth a visit, although you may not think of them at first. However, if you are really interested in some historical figure, find out where they are interred: most cemeteries have some beautiful sculpture and can be a wonderful introduction to an area’s history.
