Real Alcazar in Seville, Spain
Mudéjar’s masterpiece and UNESCO-listed palace, this palace is sure to be on every tourist’s ‘must see’. Built in the 7th century and with major additions over the centuries, parts of the Alcazar complex are still in use by the Spanish royal family. High ceilings, ornate archways, and gorgeous gardens add to the glamorous feel, but unfortunately it’s overcrowded. It can take several hours to get in if you don’t book a guided tour in advance, but it’s well worth it.
Plaza de España in Seville, Spain
It is a beautiful landmark in the heart of Seville. Built in the 20th century to reflect the city’s architecture, the square is quite large. A fountain flows through the square, and a shaded pavilion stands. If Plaza de España looks oddly familiar , it’s probably because it’s been featured in movies like Star Wars and Lawrence of Arabia .
After a complete refurbishment in 2010, wherever you look, you’ll find great details like the exquisitely designed ceramic tiles and lamps. It’s a fun place with live shows all summer long.
Torre del Oro in Seville, Spain
Originally a naval fortress and watchtower, Torre del Oro is now a great viewing point open to the public. Admission is 3 euros, and on the second floor there is a small museum about maritime history. Metropol Parasol
It is a uniquely modernist wooden landmark found in Seville’s Old Town. Designed like a series of giant mushroom-shaped treehouses, it offers classic views of the city, especially at night. Even though it’s 30 meters high, it still feels connected to the city. Descend downstairs to visit ancient Roman and Moorish ruins discovered during the construction of the Metropol Parasol, as well as a nice little market selling fresh produce. This Regina area is a great place to dine, with tapas bars and many trendy restaurants.
Barrio Santa Cruz
It is the most picturesque area of Seville and is home to many fascinating historic buildings, including the Cathedral and Alcazar. Most people stop by for a refreshing drink at the cafes and bars that line the main walkway through the park.
Alameda de Hercules
For dinner out in Seville, our top pick is Alameda de Hercules. It has a more authentic atmosphere than many of the tourist attractions in the Old Town. On one side of this large public square, tapas joints and pubs spill out onto the streets, making it a great place to browse. Head to El Disparate Tapas Bar on the west side of the square. You can enjoy delicious fish dishes.
